Not quite your grandma’s doily

Skull Doily

Doilies. I love doilies. Count me in as loving “grandma-chic” or “grandmillennial” style. To me, there is something so pleasing with mixing traditional style with a sleek modern twist and I love to use this approach for decorating my home. This can be seen through my choice of artworks, furniture, and decor items, especially if they are homemade, like doilies.

When I started crocheting a few years ago, I had no idea that making doilies would quickly become one of my favourite thing to craft. I especially love making seasonal ones for the holidays (I have so many Halloween ones that I’m running out of surfaces to display them!). I’m so fascinated by doily designers who manage to create such intricate patterns. Depending on the pattern, they generally don’t take very long to make, yet the stitches change in almost every row, which keeps your interest and is a nice change from patterns using exclusively single crochet stitches.

I have created this particular doily in a neutral colour and I display it most of the year. At first glance, it looks like a nice classic doily, but on closer inspection, skulls can be made out in the pattern. The perfect mix of grandma style with a fun modern twist.

Until next time, happy crocheting.
