Looking for the perfect spooky project? Nothing says Halloween quite like a classic black vintage cat! In this post, I’m sharing my Halloween Black Cat Mug crochet pattern, a fun, beginner-friendly project that’s perfect for decorating your home, adding to a play kitchen, or gifting to a fellow Halloween lover.
This crochet pattern is quick and easy to make, and I had so much fun designing this, I made two versions. One mug has crocheted face details while the other uses felt for that classic vintage Halloween black cat look. Both are adorable, and I honestly can’t choose a favorite! Which one do you love most?

Materials:
- 2.5mm & 3mm hooks
- Black, brown, and white yarn. I used light (3) acrylic yarn.
- Scraps of white, green and orange yarn or felt.
- Stuffing material
- Scissors
- Needle
- Stitch marker
Finished size:
Approx. 9.5cm tall by 11cm wide (including handle).
*Size will vary depending on yarn and hook sized used.

Pattern Note:
-This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. There is no need to join with a slip stitch at the end of each round.
Mug:
Round 1: In black with a 3mm hook, 6 sc in a magic circle. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)
Round 3: (1 inc, 1 sc) repeat around. (18)
Round 4: (1 inc, 2 sc) repeat around. (24)
Round 5: (1 inc, 3 sc) repeat around. (30)
Round 6: (1 inc, 4 sc) repeat around. (36)
Round 7: (1 inc, 5 sc) repeat around. (42)
Round 8: (1 inc, 6 sc) repeat around. (48)
Round 9: (1 inc, 7 sc) repeat around. (54)
Rounds 10-16: Sc around. (54)
Round 17: (1 dec, 7 sc) repeat around. (48)
Round 18: (1 dec, 6 sc) repeat around. (42)
Round 19: (1 dec, 5 sc) repeat around. (36)
Round 20: In the FLO, sc around. (36)
Round 21: Sc in the next 8 sts, ch 5, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st, hdc, dc, tr, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 7 sts, ch 5, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st, hdc, dc, tr, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 17 sts. Fasten off.
Coffee:
Round 1: In brown, 6 sc in a magic circle. (6)
Round 2: Inc around. (12)
Round 3: (1 inc, 1 sc) repeat around. (18)
Round 4: (1 inc, 2 sc) repeat around. (24)
Round 5: (1 inc, 3 sc) repeat around. (30)
Round 6: (1 inc, 4 sc) repeat around. (36) Cut off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Handle:
Round 1: In black, 6 sc in a magic circle. (6)
Rounds 2-18: Sc around. (6) Cut off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Face Details:
For the face, you can choose to crochet the details or cut and glue them out of felt. Below are the instructions to crochet the eyes and the nose.
Eyes (Make two):
Round 1: In green with a 2.5 mm hook, 8 sc in a magic circle, join with a sl st in first st. (8)
Round 2: Change to white. In BLO, sl st in the next 2 sts, (sc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc) in the same st, sl st in the next 3 sts, (sc, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc) in the same st, sl st, join with a sl st in first st. Cut off leaving a tail for sewing and add pupils with black yarn.
Nose:
In orange with a 2.5 mm hook, ch 4. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, (sl st, hdc, sl st) in the next st, sl st. Continuing on the other side of the starting ch, sc and 2 sl st along the top. Cut off leaving a tail for sewing.
To assemble:
-Put stuffing into the mug and stitch the coffee inside the mug in the back loops created in round 20.
-Attach the handle to the side of the mug.
-Attach eyes and nose.
-Add details and whiskers with white yarn.
